About
An independent astronomy reference for Poland
YaxleyField covers amateur astronomy with a focus on practical information relevant to observers in Poland — equipment choices, sky conditions, accessible dark sky locations, and the active community of stargazers across the country.
What this resource covers
The content on YaxleyField is structured around three questions that come up repeatedly among observers at various stages of the hobby: what telescope to buy, where to take it, and what to look at once it is set up. Each article in the collection attempts to answer one of these questions with enough specificity to be genuinely useful — not a general introduction, but a reference that assumes the reader wants to make a decision or take action.
The focus on Poland is deliberate. General astronomy resources in English are abundant; resources that account for Polish geography, the particular light pollution pattern of central Poland, the availability of specific equipment through Polish and European retailers, and the structure of the Polish amateur astronomy community are considerably rarer. That gap is what YaxleyField addresses.
Scope and limitations
This is not a real-time news publication or a forum. The articles are reference pieces that are updated when significant changes occur — new opposition dates, changes in retailer availability, updates to Bortle ratings from new satellite data, shifts in club activity. The publication date and last-updated date on each article indicate how current the information is.
Equipment prices and availability change faster than editorial cycles allow. Prices quoted in articles are approximate and intended to give relative rather than absolute guidance. For current market prices, retailer websites and the Polish Allegro and OLX classifieds reflect actual conditions more accurately than any fixed article can.
Astronomy clubs in Poland
The Polskie Towarzystwo Miłośników Astronomii (PTMA), founded in 1921, is the largest amateur astronomy organisation in Poland, with regional sections in most major cities. The Warsaw section holds regular monthly meetings and public observing events at the Urania Observatory. The Kraków, Wrocław, Gdańsk, and Poznań sections are all active and maintain their own observing programmes.
Several university observatories run public viewing nights — the Jagiellonian University Astronomical Observatory in Kraków and the Warsaw University Observatory both host periodic public sessions. Contact details for both are available on their institutional websites. The PTMA national site (www.ptma.pl) lists regional clubs and upcoming events.
